Training Healthy Start

A health and wellness training course for the early years

Healthy Start is a professional development initiative promoting healthy eating and physical activity in early years settings. This project was developed by a group of partners led by the Réseau Santé en français de la Saskatchewan including the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick, the University of Saskatchewan, the Université de Sherbrooke and the Université de Moncton. The development and evaluation of the Healthy Start initiative was funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan’s Community Initiatives Fund.

Healthy Start provides a new approach to mobilize early learning and childcare professionals.

Through the Healthy Start online course, you will learn:

  • About the importance of healthy eating and physical activity;
  • How to easily incorporate active play and healthy eating into the daily routine of early years children;
  • How to become familiar with Healthy Start & LEAPTM resources; and
  • How to make your own Active Play Equipment (APE Kit).

    c. Integrating healthy eating in the daily routine

2. Physical Activity

    a. Activities adapted to the development of children in early childhood

    b. Fundamental motor skills and physical literacy

    c. Let's Play!

3. Community Support

Heathy Start will help you recognize your potential to make a difference in the lives of young children!

Delivery method: This course is self-directed and offered entirely online.

Continuous Registration: You can register at any time.

Target Audience: This course is intended for early learning and child care professionals : Early childhood management teams, educators, teachers, food service staff and other professionals working in the field of Early Childhood and family services.

Note: Once you have access to the online course, you have a 2-month delay to complete it.

Conditions of success: All activities and evaluations (final quiz) must be completed as well as the feedback survey. Participants must obtain 75% or more, on the final quiz in order to obtain the certificate of achievement.

Background:

Healthy Start was launched in 2013 to encourage and enable educators and families to integrate physical activity and healthy eating in the daily lives of young children. Our vision is that Canadian early years children have healthy eating habits and are physically active every day. The Healthy Start training has been implemented in hundreds of childcare centres and in pre-kindergarten classrooms across Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, reaching thousands of children.
